what are the impact of alcoholism on women?
Jan 17th, 2010, 10:02am

what are the consequences or effect of alcoholism on women? And why?

For me, i think that women should not drink because it is unhealthy and it will affect their body function. Especially to pregnant women because drinking alcohol during pregnancy can cause permanent brain damage to your baby. This damage is called Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). Not all women who drink during pregnancy will have a child with FASD.  However, research shows that drinking increases the chance of the fetus being harmed.
Nowadays, women drinkers have increased because most women combine lots of roles like breadwinner as well as parents. When women have lots of roles to fill they will have stronger self-esteem and self-confidence. however, they do not always feel comfortable in this roles that others seem to expect from them. In addition, it can be very difficult to combine these roles. Women are expected to juggle a family and a job, however it is not always easy.

Women are more likely than men to experience depression. Some argue that this is because women face more social and biological challenges when they reach adolescence. No matter what the reason, some women who become depressed drink to feel better. hence, the number of women drinker increased rapidly.

Do u agree?

There is certainly threads of truth in what you say and of course any woman who is pregnant must take ALL necessary precautions to ensure that the baby is both physically and mentally healthy... There is no question what so ever that any pregnant woman needs and must consult with her physician from the time of conception through the birthing process.  This will certainly provide her with the proper advise on what to do and consume and not to do and consume.  It seems to me that the more complex our society appears to become, the more a woman has to be mindful of in terms of giving birth.. There is no doubt that alcohol has contributed to many of the problems that women experience during pregnancy and after as well... There is nothing more disheartening than to see a new born baby with the DT's or other related problems.. If a woman does smoke and or drink alcohol, she must take steps to ensure that these negative behaviors cease for a significant period of time before she decides to become pregnant.  One should never tempt fate or nature.... as the result could be catastrophic and there is nothing worse that a parent can experience than a new born with significant medical problems... Cry

Although, pregnant women should take extra precaution but sometime, when you are really stress, or you are a heavy drinker, you still will have the craving for that particular things like food or something you always want. Hence, they will drink also but not too much. Undecided

Ahhh, your response kinda dances around here in circles... There is no such thing as "a little bit pregnant"  One either is or isn't!  The same concept must also apply to consuming of substances when pregnant... You either make having your baby your personal priority and cease the in take of any and all substances that might do harm or you don't.  And if you don't, then both yourself and the baby will face the consequence both in the short and long term...as well as affecting everyone around you to one degree or another...
