Jacob Salas and Brian Hernandez – Guam
May 2006 - Jacob Salas (12) and Brian Hernandez (14) of Mangilao, Guam, were waiting for the bus to school one morning this March when they noticed a four-year-old boy crying by the side of the road. He was lost and scared... and the two decided to do all they could to help him get safely home. The boys were with him for two hours, looking for his house, buying him drinks and ice cream... when it started to rain, Jacob took off his uniform and covered the boy. A passing police officer took them to the station and helped them to connect the boy with his mother, who had thought her son was at a neighbor's house.
There are a lot of ways to put Youth Crime Watch's "Watch Out. Help Out" philosophy into action. And it says alot about young people like Jacob and Brian that their first reaction when faced with a trouble situation was to reach out and help. Willing to take the consequences of missing their bus and being late for the school day, they put themselves on the line for the sake of another.
We won't always find ourselves in a position to make a direct, positive impact in someone's life. But let's not forget that we can make a difference. Sometimes it takes years of effort and sometimes it only takes a moment. Let's all follow Jacob and Brian's lead.
Boys, we are proud to recognize you in our youth spotlight. You embody the Helping Out! philosophy. Keep it up.
