Araraquara Group distributes toys to the poor, helps drug abuse education program
Araraquara lies about an hour and a half from Bauru in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo. This city of 200,000 - known as the "Home of the Sun" - is home also to a thriving JCC program. Lead by Soldier Ferraz, JCC members from Pedro Jose Neto School and Henrique Scabello School have taken an active role in bettering their community. Most recently they organized a charitable campaign to deliver toys to children in Araraquara's poorer neighborhoods. Over 500 items were collected and a group of 30 JCC members wearing their distinctive blue JCC vests and caps gathered one bright summer morning (in the southern hemisphere December is in the summertime!) to visit children with the gifts. Among those who benefited were children from the Anunciata Lia Davi Sport Center, District of Hortensias, the Monte Alegre Camp for the Landless, and other families. The students had their own energetic advisor, Soldier Ferraz, to count on in this campaign as well as volunteers such as Soldiers Sandra Regina, Lucelia, Cibele, and Carvalho... and of course, Santa Claus himself. Local press covered the effort.

The JCC groups have also actively supported other crime and drug abuse prevention efforts in their communities. For example, students helped with the certificate awards ceremony for the local DARE program where 200 youth graduated from the program.
And in addition to the satisfaction of helping others, JCC members at both schools were rewarded with their own end of the year graduation ceremony and dance. They deserve it. Good job, Araraquara!
