Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria helps schools and communities in Nigeria start and sustain their YCW programs. Services include:

Since its establishment in 2002, YCWN's membership has spread to Ibadan, Orile-Iganmu, Ilupeju, and Anthony Village. Both university and secondary schools have embraced the YCW program: the University of Lagos, Baptist Academy Secondary School, Ilupeju College, and, most recently, St. Teresa's College.

Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria helps young people face various life challenges. In pursuit of this goal, it partners with various national and international agencies with similar objectives.

January 2010: YCWN talk aims to help girls

Ronke Adedokun, a young woman studying in the United States, took time during her winter break to visit young girls at Saint Teresa's College, Ibadan. Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria arranged the visit. Adedokun's talk focused on how girls can stay safe, how they can support each other and tips for staying out of trouble. Rape is a problem of prime importance for the girls, so her comments addressed this subject specifically - going out in numbers, where and how to report, etc. In attendance were the school principal, Mrs. Tomi, the YCWN coordinator for school programs Gbenga Adeleye, Supo Odeleye, Wale Akala, and a host of others.

October 21, 2009: YCW Nigeria Ebonyi chapter organizes environmental seminar

The members of YCWN Ebonyi State Chapter identified a need to address environmental issues to "avert the possible dangers that current climactic change poses for humanity." The students decided to organize a seminar on Octboer 21, 2009, at St. Theresa's Secondary School Okpaugwu Abakaliki. Its stated objectives were to educate about the consequences of pollution, to encourage student involvement in combatting pollution, and to develop positive civic attitudes among students. The seminar looked at pollution as a crime against the environment and framed the discussion on a crime prevention theme. Participants included the Honorable Jasper Okezie, founder of the Neighborhood Environmental Watch, Ebonyi State, Mr. Ugochukwu Okolie, founder of Rural Link International, Casey Chinedu Nwasum, for Youth Crime Watch Ebonyi State Chapter, students and teachers from St. Theresa's Secondary School, and members of YCWN Ebonyi State Chapter, Neighbourhood Environment Watch, and Rural Link International.

October 2009: YCW Nigeria teams up the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to prevent cyber crime

As part of Nigeria's "rebranding" process, YCW Nigeria undertook a project that ranks among the most important, the prevention of cyber crime among Nigerian youths. Between the months of September and October 2009, the YCW Nigeria Team stopped and returned two parcels to their rightful owners. The goods were en-route to Nigeria from Italy and Belgium to be collected by two Nigerians who perpetrated online crime. The senders, Antonio from Italy and Michele from Belgium, contacted the YCW Nigeria and we acted promptly to stop the goods with the great support and assistance from the Chief Investigation Officer (CIO) of the Nigeria Postal Services and EMS to stop and return the goods to their owners after the act has been confirmed and investigated.

September 29, 2009: Casey 'Gbenga Adeleye named as "Rebrand Nigeria" Youth Ambassador

At a time when Nigeria is going through rebranding process with the slogan, Nigeria: Good Country, Good People; the YCW Nigeria Coordinator, Casey ‘Gbenga Adeleye was honoured and named as "Rebrand Nigeria" Youth Ambassador for his contribution towards building a positive society and youth development.

He was awarded with other dignitaries like the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Otunba (Dr.) Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala (Governance & Social category), Senator Teslim Folarin (Legislature), Prof. Taoheed Adedoja (Education), Evang. Yinka Ayefele (Entertainment), Mr. Adebayo Adesoji, Jazzy B (Youth Empowerment) and thirty-nine others. The event was organized by the Association of Registered Social Youth Clubs in Nigeria in partnership with the Oyo State Agency for Youth Development. The Honourable Minister of Information, Prof. Dora Akunyili who is also chair of the "Rebrand Nigeria" Project delivered the keynote address.

August 12, 2009: YCW Nigeria celebrates U.N. International Day of Youth with Nigeria Union of Journalists

The YCW Nigeria commemorated the United Nations International Day of Youth with a ground-breaking Youth Forum in partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) (Oyo State Council). The forum brought together youth from across the South-west States to discuss the issues of crime, democracy, leadership, governance, education, corruption, culture, and religion as it affects Nigerian society. Participants concluded that "it is imperative that youth embrace the challenge of sustainability in its fullness as they help pave the way forward through the 21st century and beyond. Youth action, inclusion, and their full participation are keys to developing today’s world for the generations of today and tomorrow and central to a sustainable existence. Youths should help to reshape the Nigeria nation instead of using violence and other criminal acts as tools for agitation."

At the event were Dr. O. Osifade, Alh. Kehinde Monsuru, Pastor Courage Sokpor from Youth Development and Empowerment Forum (YDEF), representatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), National Youth Service Corps, Civil Society groups, the Commissioner of Police, the Media and youth organizations.

July 2009: Workshop to Promote Community Safety

The Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria (YCWN) partnered with the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Women's Wing of the Ibadan Southwest Local Government and the Menopause Care Foundation to hold a workshop on July 18th at the Ebenezer African Church Cathedral, Anfani, Ibadan. The workshop addressed the theme of building and promoting community safety as a collective responsibility, featuring Casey 'Gbenga Adeleye, YCWN national coordinator, and the topic health is wealth, presented by Dr. O. Osifade, MCF Nigeria Coordinator. The program spoke especially to women, encouraging them to take their part in making a safer community environment.

May 2008: Nigerian National Conference on Corruption Focuses on Building Transparency

Members of the YCW Nigeria participated in the just concluded National Conference on Corruption organized by the Independent Corrupt Practises and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the National Assembly Committee on Corruption in Akure, Ondo State capital between 16th and 18th June 2009. The three-day conference, which has participants from the southwest geo-political zone, is aimed at providing a much-sought platform and collaboration between legislative committees on anti-corruption from the three tiers of government and the ICPC and between legislative committees and ACTUs on how best we can move the fight against corruption forward." The theme of the conference, which is "Building and promoting transparency and accountability in public and private sectors: A collective responsibility of all Nigerians," was chosen "to emphasise our belief that fighting corruption is not the sole responsibility of the ICPC or government alone but the collective responsibility of every citizen of this great country."

May 2008: YCWN Participates in International Forum in Geneva

Two members of Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria, Casey ‘Gbenga Adeleye (National Coordinator) and Casey Wasiu Adekunle participated in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2009 and the 12th Session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development in Geneva, Switzerland, this month. They had the opportunity to contribute to some sessions of the forum like:

  • Libraries Driving Access to Knowledge
  • Connecting to the Future: Reaching Children in Need Through New Technologies
  • Bridging the Standardization Gap
  • Territories of Tomorrow
  • WSIS Action Line Facilitators Meeting (Child Online Protection Initiative, Cybersecurity and Protecting Children from Cyber exploitation)

Adeleye and Adekunle were also able to participate in the pre-conference briefing of the 11th session of the International Human Rights Council on 27th May 2009 and in the commemoration of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers on 28th May 2009. Meeting with Ministers and Head of Intergovernmental relations at the UN Office in Geneva - a milestone.

Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria was officially welcomed to the Pre-conference of the 11th Session of the International Human Right Council as observer and is initiating Community Radio/ICT Initiatives with the International Telecommunication Union officials - a project which will commence soon in some of Nigeria's rural communities.

December 2008: YCWN leader speaks on youth and crime prevention

YCW Nigeria's Casey ‘Gbenga Adeleye was a featured speaker at the Celestial Church of Christ Adult Harvest on the 13th of December 2008. His talk focused on the topic of “YOUTH AND CRIME PREVENTION: CHURCH ROLES." Over two hundred young people attended the program with the support of the National Youth of the Celestial Church of Christ in Nigeria. The event was held at CCC Bembo Area, Apata, Ibadan.

December 2008: Campaign aginst drug abuse

Youth Crime Watch Nigeria members participated in the National Conference and Awareness Campaign on Drug Abuse at Abeokuta and Ibadan. The event was organized by the National Drug Law enforcement Agency.

November 27, 2008: Formal launch, new magazine, award presentation

casey international - first editionYouth Crime Watch of Nigeria held a formal program launch at the State Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan which was attended by dignitaries from both within and outside the State. Part of the program was the presentation of the maiden edition of their new crime prevention magazine, unique in the YCW community. The publication is entitled "Casey International" and features crime prevention advice, articles, crime statistics, and more. The event also included an awards ceremony recognizing YCW supporters in Nigeria, including the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Ottunba Dr. Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala, JP, the Chief Security Officer in the state.

Awards

Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria (Oyo State Chapter) won the "OUTSTANDING YOUTH ORGANIZATION AWARD FOR THE YEAR 2004", an award organized by the Matrix Club under the Youth Development Council in conjunction with the Oyo State House of Assembly.

Spotlight

Casey Gbenga Adeleye won the scholarship program of the LUND University, Sweden sponsored by the United Nations Education on Sustainable Development, an organization that the Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria (Oyo State Chapter) serve as member of the Youth Caucus.  He was also named as the Project Director of National Youth Council of Nigeria (Oyo State), an umbrella body of all youth organizations in Nigeria. He was also appointed as the Project Manager, National Youth Network on HIV/AIDS (NYNET).

Casey Wale Aderibigbe, the Coordinator of YCW site, George & Duke International College, Ibadan won the Teacher of the Year Award 2004 and promoted to the post of the Vice-Principal based on the YCW efforts in the School and State.

Also based on the Youth Crime Watch activities and programs at the George & Duke International College, members of the Youth Crime Watch program were selected as School Prefects by the Director of the School based on their performances in the YCW and at the school events.
