About Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria

Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria helps schools and communities in Nigeria start and sustain their YCW programs. Services include:

  • Background information about Youth Crime Watch
  • YCW awareness presentations
  • YCW implementation training for your site
  • Technical assistance getting your site started
  • Technical assistance once your site is up and running

Since its establishment in 2002, YCWN's membership has spread to Ibadan, Orile-Iganmu, Ilupeju, and Anthony Village. Both university and secondary schools have embraced the YCW program: the University of Lagos, Baptist Academy Secondary School, Ilupeju College, and, most recently, St. Teresa's College.

Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria helps young people face various life challenges. In pursuit of this goal, it partners with various national and international agencies with similar objectives.

Jan 2008: YCW Nigeria joins the fight against corruption

Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria has been selected as a member of the National Anti-Corruption Coalition (NACC), a coalition of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

On December 10-12, 2007, Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria participated in the Three-day Capacity Building Workshop for Members of the National Anti-Corruption Coalition (NACC) organized by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at the Reiz Continental Hotel, Abuja.

November 30, 2007 – CHRISTIAN YOUTH & SOCIETY: WHAT IMPORTANCE? WHAT IMPLICATIONS?

Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria took its program to the Christian Youths and organized a day Christian Youth Leadership Summit held at the All Nations Evangelical Church (ANEC) Auditorium, Ibadan. The purpose of the program is to bring all the Christian Youth into the Youth Crime Watch program and solicit for the help and assistance of Christian Leaders in providing conducive atmosphere free of crime, corruption, drug abuse and violence.

October 2 -4, 2007 – National Anti-Corruption Campaign

The Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria participated in the 2007 National Conference of Anti-Corruption Committees in Nigeria Legislatures and Heads of Anti-Corruption Units in Government Establishments organized by the National Assembly and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) held at Oshogbo, Osun State, Nigeria.

Ekiti State delegates
Ekiti State Government delegates (Clerk of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, 2nd Right, Special Adviser to the Governor on Due Process, 2nd Left and Principal Officers of the State) at the conference. May 2007: YCW Nigeria Leader Speaks Out on Society's Ills

Following Nigeria's election debacle, YCWN's Gbenga Adeleye took a pen to paper to outline the ills plaguing his country today. His editorial, Truth: Nigeria's magic for progress... youth appeared May 2, 2007, in Nigeria's National Daily.

April 2007: YCW Nigeria Observes National Elections

Volunteers from Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria did their part to try to help their country through national presidential elections this month. YCWN members were on site at polling booths across the country to aid the ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In a campaign and election rife with problems, they had their hands full. In the midst of widespread reports of irregularities and abuses at the polls and violence on the street, we applaud their valiant effort.

YCWN intends to pursue and educational campaign to promote a civic society with real citizen participation. It is acts like theirs that will help this nation build a fair and moral society. And though there be setbacks, we can only hope that people such as those at YCWN will prevail.

March 2007: One Thousand Youth March Against Violence in Nigeria

Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria will participate in the One Thousand Youth March Against Violence in Nigeria, a series of marches planned for the period from April 2 to 12, 2007, in major cities across Nigeria.

December 2006: AIDS Day

On December 1st 2006, the Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria joined other youth organizations, government agencies, and non-profits to commemorate world AIDS day in Nigeria. The YCWN participated at a rally organized by the Network of Youth Organizations working against HIV and AIDS in Nigeria, in which YCWN is an active member and holds an executive position. The members of the YCWN were fully involved in the event.

November 2006: National Youth Conference on Political Violence

National Conference

YCWN presented the National Youth Conference on Political Violence on November 29-30, 2006 at the National Museum Centre, Ibadan, Nigeria.

The Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria organized a two-day National Youth Conference on Political Violence, Crime and Corruption in Nigeria. The event was held at the National Museum Centre, Ibadan. Speaking at the occasion were Mrs. R.F. Sali, Executive Secretary, Oyo State Agency for Youth Development, Bishop I.O. Odeleye, YCW Parent Advisor, Mr. Jonathan Johnson, Commissioner of Police, Oyo State represented by CSP Chris Ero, Mr. Yinka Ayanlola from Nation Builders' Organization. The Nigeria media were also at the event, the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Galaxy Television and Nigerian Trubune. It was well attended by students and youth from Oyo State and beyond. Students from the Youth Crime Watch site at Yejide Girls Grammmar School staged a drama on corruption. YCWN plans a sequel to this successful conference in October 2007.

March 2006: National Census

The Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria participated in the March National Population Census in NIGERIA conducted by the National Population Commission. Prior to this event, YCWN held a one-day forum on political violence prevention in Ibadan in which the Commission took part.

February 2006: Youth Forum

YCWN's one-day youth forum on political violence and youth unrest in the Niger-Delta was organized in partnership with the National Population Commission and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to create an enabling environment for the National Population Census and electoral process in Nigeria. The program was held on Friday February 17th 2006 at the Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria temporary office, Ibadan. The program kick started our POWERED TO SAY NO project for the youth in the Niger-Delta region and other States of the federation.

Awards

Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria (Oyo State Chapter) won the "OUTSTANDING YOUTH ORGANIZATION AWARD FOR THE YEAR 2004", an award organized by the Matrix Club under the Youth Development Council in conjunction with the Oyo State House of Assembly.

Spotlight

Casey Gbenga Adeleye won the scholarship program of the LUND University, Sweden sponsored by the United Nations Education on Sustainable Development, an organization that the Youth Crime Watch of Nigeria (Oyo State Chapter) serve as member of the Youth Caucus.  He was also named as the Project Director of National Youth Council of Nigeria (Oyo State), an umbrella body of all youth organizations in Nigeria. He was also appointed as the Project Manager, National Youth Network on HIV/AIDS (NYNET).

Casey Wale Aderibigbe, the Coordinator of YCW site, George & Duke International College, Ibadan won the Teacher of the Year Award 2004 and promoted to the post of the Vice-Principal based on the YCW efforts in the School and State.

Also based on the Youth Crime Watch activities and programs at the George & Duke International College, members of the Youth Crime Watch program were selected as School Prefects by the Director of the School based on their performances in the YCW and at the school events.
