Summer 2008: Senegal joins the Youth Crime Watch community
Youth Crime Watch of Senegal launched this summer with a working trip to Senegal by founder Francois Gaye. Gaye met with the Minister of Justice, the Governor, and the Chief of Police. The idea of Youth Crime Watch in Senegal was welcomed and the government agreed to provide office space for the new organization. Mr. Gaye's work with youth reaches beyond his efforts with Youth Crime Watch: He is providing tuition scholarships for 100 youth to make it possible for them to attend school and stay off the streets. Senegal has experienced great problems with street begging. One of YCW Senegal's earliest efforts seeks to address this problem. A youth patrol of about 25 hits the streets every Friday and Saturday to bring in child beggars (known in the vernacular as talibes, see explanation) to a center where they can shower, eat, and sleep.
